BETTER SINGLE CARRIAGEWAYS? CURRENT ISSUES IN HIGHWAY DESIGN - PROCEEDINGS OF CONFERENCE ON HIGHWAY DESIGN TODAY AND TOMORROW, INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS, LONDON, 6 FEB 1985

Highway link design has brought fundamental changes to the design of rural single carriageways. Such changes are justified if they result in better single carriageways. The claims made for highway link designs are that they are less costly roads, on which vehicles will be able to operate more cheaply, safely and at higher levels of comfort; furthermore, these designs will be more sympathetic to the environment. The paper examines these claims, firstly by briefly considering the principles involved and secondly by comparing some example designs with their predecessors. Its conclusion is that highway link design has the potential to produce better single carriageways and that designers are using that potential. For covering abstract see IRRD 810707. (Author/TRRL)
