TECHNOLOGY AT THE ROAD USER'S SERVICE. 2ND WORLD CONGRESS OF THE INTERNATIONAL ROAD SAFETY ORGANISATION, LUXEMBOURG, SEPTEMBER 16-19, 1986
At a time when road networks can no longer cope with the increase in traffic which all countries are experiencing with its train of accidents, road equipment appears as a useful tool for improving road safety and traffic flow. Part of this equipment, because of its functional power, is electronic technology which today offers a daily temporary solution to road safety problems. The object of this presentation is to describe the principle themes of research and development aimed at the fight against road accidents using electronic equipment. The latter is discussed in terms of control, information and managements of road traffic, general state of the technology, its potential and perceived objectives. This will apply more precisely to traffic detection, locating of vehicles, evaluation of situations, information to drivers (when faced with difficulties with their own vehicle and with exceptional situations which cannot be foreseen) and respect of regulations. Once developed, the technological equipment must be installed, operated, maintained and adapted to changing situations. This certainly cannot be achieved without development of the services responsible for the road. The hopes which the application of electronics to road safety have raised, are great.
