SUITABLE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL TRAFFIC SIGNS AND ADEQUATE SAFETY EQUIPMENT, ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR ROAD SAFETY IN TOWNS AND MUNICIPALITIES. 2ND WORLD CONGRESS OF THE INTERNATIONAL ROAD SAFETY ORGANISATION, LUXEMBOURG, SEPTEMBER 16-19, 1986

The paper gives statistics on road injuries and deaths in towns in several European countries, broken down by categories of user (pedestrians, cyclists and motorists) and size of built-up areas, and shows variations over several years. The effects of various safety equipment is then described in the fields of: horizontal signs, with advantages of retroreflection; vertical signs; good organisation of instructions by means of fixed or variable signs and traffic lights; facilities for 2-wheeled traffic; and facilities for pedestrians. Finally, in a field which has been little studied so far, the paper deals with the problem of warnings at accident sites and the problem of first aid by witnesses. For the covering abstract of the congress see IRRD 810683. (Author/TRRL)
