THE TECHNICAL PRACTICE ON CONSTRUCTION FOR LARGE TUNNEL THROUGH AN ACCUMULATED SECTION. LARGE ROCK CAVERNS - PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, HELSINKI, FINLAND, 25-28 AUGUST 1986. VOLUME 3
A large traffic tunnel in the urban area of Chongqing had been constructed on the site of accumulated section which was formed thirty years ago. It is a very difficult place to construct a tunnel. A new method had been adopted to overcome this difficulty. This paper gives an outline of this new method which consists in piling a set of horizontal steel pipes forming a loading arch, then opening the tunnel and lining it. This successful technical experience has saved a good deal of construction investments. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 810647. (TRRL)
