OPERATING LIGHT RAIL ON THE RAILWAY EMBANKMENT AROUND AMSTERDAM. TRANSPORTATION PLANNING RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM 1987, EIGHT MILLION CARS IN 2010, THE HAGUE, NOVEMBER 26-27, 1987
SNELTRAMEXPLOITATIE OP DE RINGBAAN IN AMSTERDAM
A study has recently been completed into possible ways of using the embankment of the ring railway around Amsterdam to improve public transport connections between the surrounding region and the city's peripheral areas, in particular the sub-centres in the periphery. Both trains and trams have been considered for this purpose. Providing as many direct connections as possible via the railway embankment was found to be very unprofitable. A direct line between Sloterdijk station and southeast Amsterdam was found to be a valuable link in the connection between the region and the sub-centres, and from one peripheral area to another. A condition for the success of such a link is a frequent service, which can be realized most effectively by light rail. A further result is that light rail on the railway embankment will constitute a structural factor in Amsterdam's public transport network. The paper will explain that only a fundamentally different concept of public transport will make it possible for the ring railway to function efficiently and for the share of public transport to retain its present level. This network concept is based on a hierarchy of lines, differentiated in time and space and resulting in a primary, secondary and tertiary network.
