ELASTIC STABILITY OF BURIED ELLIPTICAL TUBES
An investigation is reported of the elastic stability of elliptical tubes, and the parametric solution was extended to include elliptical tube behavior. The existing literature on the subject is reviewed, the problem is defined, and the numerical analysis is described. Deep burial, shallow burial, and the influence of prebuckling deformations are discussed. The conclusions drawn from the study are presented. For non-uniformly loaded circular tubes, maximum hoop force can be used to calculate a conservative factor of safety relative to the critical hoop force for uniformly stressed structures. However, the stability estimate so determined may be quite conservative, and finite element analyses for individual structures may be needed to obtain economical estimates. Linear buckling strength is a useful estimate of metal culvert elastic buckling strength.
