FINANCIAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH LOCAL AND REGIONAL RAILROAD SERVICE FAILURES

The purpose of this paper was to determine if certain financial and/or other demographic ratios might be employed as a method of assessing the relative viability of local and regional (L&R) railroads. In essence, the analysis sought to determine which quantitative factors have been historically related to L&R railroad success and failure. A discriminant model was discovered that was able to accurately classify over 90 percent of failed and successful L&R railroads 1 year immediately before failure. However, the main conclusion from the study was that financial modelling, while useful, is only one analysis tool that can provide insight into L&R railroad viability. The greatest chance for viability of L&R railroads was found to be the ability of railroad management to effectively plan and deal with a changing and uncertain environment.
