737-400 CRASH INVESTIGATION TURNS TO ENGINE INSTRUMENTS

Investigators are centering their attention on secondary engine instruments, which may have played a major role in the sequence of events that led to the crash of a British Midland Airways Boeing 737-400 in Britain on January 8, 1989. The accident, in which 44 passengers died, came after the flight crew shut down the aircraft's right engine, although post-crash examination showed that the left engine had been damaged by fire before the accident. Investigators are seeking to determine if the engine vibration indicators are subject to providing false or inaccurate data or if they are so located that they could be easily misread or confused with other instruments in the same area.
