BOMB IN FORWARD HOLD DESTROYED PAN AM 747, INVESTIGATORS FIND
The British Air Accidents Investigation Branch reported that a bomb destroyed a Pan American Airways Boeing 747 on December 21, 1988, over Lockerbie, Scotland. The bomb ruptured the aircraft's fuselage on the left side near the No. 1 cargo and baggage hold, just forward of the wing, causing the aircraft to break up into five major segments. It is believed that the explosive used was Semtex, a plastic-based family of explosives made only in Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakian explosive experts are assisting in the on-going investigation.
