HELENA DEVELOPS MONEY-SAVING MAINTENANCE FORMULA
This article presents a formula developed by Helena that has enabled the city to seal its 150 miles of two-lane asphalt roads and highways every ten years at a fraction of the cost of other techniques. A crack-filling system has recently been added to the program and has cut costs even further. The formula calls for rejuvenation of seven miles of pavement, chip sealing of seven miles, and slurry sealing of three (sometimes up to five) miles annually. This 7-7-3 formula evolved from the use of a rejuvenator, first applied 15 years ago to extend pavement life.
