TRUCK SAFETY AND FINANCIAL DISTRESS: A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS

This study examines the relationship between financial condition and various measures of safety performance in the post deregulated U.S. trucking industry. The study focuses specifically on the general freight carrier segment of the industry which is, in turn, segmented into two groups, carriers which have gone bankrupt since 1981 and carriers which have been highly successful since 1981. Measures of safety performance considered are expenditures on safety, compliance with Federal safety regulations and accident rates.
