FEDERAL EXPRESS/TIGERS MERGER WOULD RESHAPE CARGO INDUSTRY

The acquisition of Tiger International by Federal Express must be reviewed and approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The purchase of the company itself must be approved by the U.S. Justice Department. The benefits to be obtained by the merger include: accelerated development of global door-to-door cargo and express services among Federal Express' competitors, particularly in Europe; a more efficient and service-conscious industry; accelerated adoption of computerized systems to manage cargo shipments; and development of air cargo markets in Asia and South America. This article discusses the obstacles to be overcome before Federal Express can begin to realize the benefits of buying Tiger International.
