TRUCK NOISE IV-D: THE REDUCTION OF ENGINE NOISE ON HEAVY DUTY DIESEL TRUCKS
The vibration of the external surfaces of the engine is sometimes a major cause of noise emissions from a Detroit Diesel 8V-71, two cycle diesel engine. Since major engine modifications were beyond the scope of this project, the reduction in engine noise was obtained through shielding. One shielding technique employed close-fitting acoustical covers mounted to the engine itself. Another employed a partial engine enclosure mounted to the chassis. With both shielding techniques, the proper acoustical lining was found to be important as well as sealing. A Detailed development of these shields is given.
