UPLIFT OF ANCHOR PLATES IN SAND. E. J. MURRAY AND JAMES D. GEDDES

The discusser commends the authors for their in-depth investigation of uplift behavior, and notes that some of the results of the investigation are consistent with the discusser's observations. Other experimental results and their explanation are discussed. The use of inaccurate failure mechanisms in the analysis could be the reason in explaining certain apparently discrepent observations. The authors in their closure note the value of the discusser's comments, and his agreement with the effect of interface friction that produces an increase in anchor capacity due to a greater dissipation of energy within the anchor system. Comments are made on the discusser's uplift test results, and the equilibrium analyses and the equations for uplift capacity yielded by them. Comments are also made about shallow and deep anchors.
