PAVER SMOOTHS SUB-BASE JOB

A description is given of the North Devon link road, being built to join the A39 at Bideford with the M5 and planned to open in the summer of 1989. Details are given of the plant used with particular reference to the use of an asphalt paving machine for laying sub-base. Using a blaw knox bk95 900-1000 t per day of sub-base are laid to a depth of 180-190 mm with a smooth finish and less wastage. The project has been well organised and is ahead of schedule and has also been helped by efficient earth moving and supply of granular fill and rock through the narrow country lanes. Residents have accepted this congestion so far, but it is expected to get worse. Details are given of all the plant involved including motorscrapers, loaders, dumper trucks and backhoes. (TRRL)
