PITFALLS THAT AWAIT PEDESTRIANS

It is pointed out that of all road users, the pedestrian has been neglected and at present has to put up with an environment as bad for walking as any in history. The government has belatedly recognised the needs of pedestrians and two major studies dealing with their problems have been published by consultants for the Department of Transport. One report by the national consumer council states that nearly half the adult population of Britain may experience problems with cracked or uneven pavements in their neighbourhood. A number of people have sustained serious injuries through trips or falls. More spending on footways within highway budgets is called for and new national standards for footways with standard maintainance procedures are set out in the ncc report. It is noted that although blacktop is seen as the most expedient, short term solution to footway maintenance, it can also be unsightly and has a relatively short life. A more aesthetically pleasing, technically proven, longer term solution is said to be a new range of smaller paving flags. (TRRL)
