DEREGULATION: THE VIEW FROM THE BUS STOP
This article draws together the results of monitoring of bus deregulation in the UK from the passengers' point of view relying chiefly on the work of Buswatch and on published Transport and Road Research Laboratory data. NBC companies registered 76% of their previous routes, 47% of their previous Sunday miles and 57% of their previous evening miles. There was a low level of interest from new operators and minibus services were popular. The Buswatch panel is found to be an accurate reflection of actual passengers with 70% being female and mainly without driving licenses. Other data found in the survey is given including facilities at bus stops, reliability, type of bus, cleanliness, boarding ease and staff attitude. Passengers found lack of information a problem and it is suggested that there is inadequate consumer representation. (TRRL)
