THE USE OF IMAGE PROCESSING FOR TRAFFIC DATA COLLECTION

USO DE PROCESAMIENTO DE IMAGENES PARA RECOLECTAR INFORMACION DE TRAFFICO

This paper presents the fundamental ideas behind the automatic processing of traffic data contained in video casettes. This processing is performed on a computer with programs that try to operate on the information in a similar way to the human eye and brain. The paper considers some of the characteristics and limitations of the TV image and camera. Then the basic processes involved in the digital analysis of images, such as digitizing, segmentation, use of thresholds and background extraction, are explained, and the use of parallel processing computers is discussed. Finally, as an example of the performance to be expected with current technology, the results of two automatic traffic data collection programs -for counting and following vehicles respectively -are presented.
