EXPLOITING STATISTICAL METHODS FOR OBTAINING TRAFFIC FLOW AND AXLE LOAD DATA
Most highway agencies in North America use traffic volume and vehicle weight data as an essential input for their pavement management systems. This paper discusses the recent technological developments in axle load and traffic volume data collection systems. Example outputs are shown from weigh-in-motion scales, vehicle classifiers and vehicle monitors. Statistical models are fitted to the daily traffic volumes of 5-axle semitrailer trucks. Subsequently, time series models are fitted to the daily equivalent axle load (eal) repetitions and it is shown that overall prediction of eal repetitions can be based on short-term vehicle volume sampling.
