NTSB URGES AIR TRAFFIC REVIEW AFTER AIR FORCE ONE INCIDENT

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is recommending that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) conduct a detailed review of air traffic control in the northeast U.S. to correct problems that permitted Air Force One and a commuter aircraft to come within 1.5 mi. of each other on October 12, 1988. Key to the incident were communication mixups between New York and Washington air traffic controllers, who were not fully aware of the status of the two aircraft.
