MARKET STUDIES INDICATE DEMAND FOR HIGH-SPEED CIVIL TRANSPORT
U.S.-based studies of the market for a high-speed civil transport clearly show that demand for the aircraft exists, but the challenges of building the Mach 2-3 transport remain. NASA, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas are engaged in a Fiscal 1989 research program focusing on three major issues--engine emissions, sonic boom and community noise. A separate program at Battelle is exploring the prospects for developing a high-speed transport. Objectives of the first phase of the Battelle program include selection of a preferred design, definition of critical technologies, assessment of the environmental consequences, and further investigation of economic viability.
