MESH-BASED CATHODIC DECK PROTECTION
In order to protect the concrete bridge deck reinforcing bars from corrosion, a cathodic protection system employing an anode mesh was installed and activated on the Jones Falls Expressway, Baltimore, Maryland. It is expected that the installation will eliminate the need for cyclical patching of the deck, and lengthen the deck's service life. The system employed is based on proprietary technology that employs a precious metal oxide catalyst that prevents damage to surrounding concrete. The titanium anode substrate employed as an electrical conductor has low electrical resistance, chemical stability, and in mesh form offers great redundancy of available electrical paths. Also, the anode mesh is compatible within its concrete environment. The system is expected to give protection from corrosion for 25 years.
