FLY ASH FILLS A VALLEY

Filling a valley with fly ash and containing it with a geotextile-aggregate blanket, help cut construction costs on a Pennsylvania highway project. The Pennsylvania Department of Transport placed nearly 400,000 tons of fly ash (waste from coal-fired power plants) in a structural fill along I-279. Geotextiles were used extensively to allay environmental concerns about the use of fly ash and lime stabilized scrubber sludges as fill for constrction projects. A geotextile-aggregate blanket underdrain spans the full width of the valley for the 1,200 feet length of the fill. The drain consists of 9,500 cubic yards of No. 57 gravel sandwiched between 104,500 sq yard of needle punched nonwoven fabric. Groundwater infiltration and stormwater runoff controls were prime considerations both during and after construction. Details of the project are summarized.
