ANALYSIS OF CABLE-STAYED BRIDGES SUPPORTED BY FLEXIBLE TOWERS
A linear, simple, and efficiently programmed, new, interative method for the analysis of cable-stayed bridges is described which makes it possible to solve large systems on PC computers and analyze towers having any degree of flexibility with SSI (soil-structure interaction) included. The numerical results compare very well with those obtained from the nonlinear stiffness method which means that the linear solution is quite reasonable for such type of bridges. The study found that the analysis which considers only pylons with fixed tips predicts unrealistic response and internal forces. Therefore pier flexibility and soil-structure interaction have to be considered in the analysis of such important structures.
