STUDY OF S SUB U PREDICTED BY PRESSUREMETER TEST

The pressuremeter test is used to measure the lateral stress in the ground, the stress-strain behavior, and the strength of the soil at any depth. A laboratory model of the pressuremeter was designed and built to simulate the field test. The model was used to study and verify the available methods of analysis. The model was designed to expand a cylindrical cavity within an artificially sedimented cohesive soil in a state of plane-strain under either an undrained or drained condition. Prior to expanding the cavity, the soil is consolidated-rebounded to the required stress level and stress history. Soil tests and typical results are presented, and interpretation techniques are discussed. Pressuremeter analysis is reviewed. Failure state for different overconsolidated values are also discussed. Conclusions regarding the following are presented: the variation of S sub u values; comparison of the predicted S sub u-OCR curve with that of the triaxial compression test; yielding surface of kaolin samples; the point of normal consolidation; the third failure mode; and stress-strain response. The S sub u value predicted from the pressuremeter test is a function of the test apparatus, the test procedure, and also the interpretation method. Thus, there exists a need for standardization in these areas.
