SENDAI SUBWAY SERVES THE MILKY WAY
The Sendai subway consists of sixteen stations, twelve of which are underground. Most stations are based on a two-level design with separate platform and concourse levels while Sendai station has three levels due to underground gas pipes and electricity cables. Island platforms are provided on all levels with both escalator and lift access. Special facilities for both the elderly and handicapped include special flagstones and wall tapes with tactile bumps to guide the blind, special toilets, ticket gates which allow wheelchair passage, and ramps and telephones at various locations. The design of the walls and ceilings reflect the character of the community depicting zelkova trees, constellations of stars and scenes from the four seasons.
