SURVIVAL IN A DEREGULATED MARKET
The deregulation of routes and fares in Santiago led to constant fare increases, an increase in the number of vehicles on the road which in turn brought about tremendous increases in traffic congestion and pollution. In an effort to alleviate these situations, a metro-minibus service called Metrobus was developed. The rubber-tyred metro and bus service have enjoyed increased ridership, reduced fares while extension of both metro lines and bus service are in the planning stages.
