CALCUTTA COMPLETE BY 1991
The Calcutta metro which is expected to be completed by 1991 is described. The various tunnel construction methods, cut-and-cover and shield tunnelling, diaphragm walls and sheet piling, decking to keep overhead traffic flowing during construction, and various other techniques used are discussed. After overcoming difficulties presented because many of these methods were used for the first time presenting problems for the engineers who were unfamiliar with them, the system has already begun to make important contributions to the city's transport.
