AQUEDUCT CONSTRUCTION BARRELS ALONG
Scheduling is the key as more than 300 concrete pipe sections, each 17 ft. in diameter and about 25 ft. long, are cast-in-place at a four-a-day pace by four form travelers. Two concrete crews each pour two "barrels" per day, while two other crews strip and move two forms apiece each night. A fifth crew, working with a three month head start on the others, assembles and ties three massive rebar cages a day. The project is on the east branch of the aqueduct bringing water to southern California from the northern part of the state. Because of the critical scheduling of operations, the contractor elected to place a 3-in.-thick concrete mud slab at the bottom of the 35-ft.-deep trench. That slab helps keep all operations out of the mud and serves as a stay-in-place bottom form for the barrels. Work on the 680 day project started in mid-1987 and will be completed this fall (1988).
