CADD HELPS IMPROVE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
To keep up with California's tremendous growth and to accelerate project scheduling and add new projects, a team was formed by the California Department of Transportation (Catrans) to evaluate how state-of-the-art CADD (computer aided design and drafting) hardware and software would improve project development productivity. At the conclusion of the study, Caltrans' management selected the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Interactive Graphics Roadway Design System (IGrds). This article describes Caltrans' CADD system, personnel training, and IGrds development. Caltrans has made a large investment in CADD. The CADD project, including IGrds, is a six-year scheduled implementation project and full benefits are not expected until the system is fully operational. Among the benefits expected are decreased plan preparation time, expedited review processes, the ability to make changes faster, and the provision to the public of better facilities as early as possible.
