THE FUTURE NEED FOR SKILLED WORKERS

There are growing indications that the construction industry will be short of labor in the mid-1990s and that the traditional means of overcoming these shortages will be inadequate. While the number of potentially available new workers cannot be changed, the number needed by the construction industry can be better identified. This information can be used to develop local plans to meet the future need for construction labor. One group working to gather more information about those needs is the Construction Labor Research Council (CLRC). Using data collected by CLRC, the Associated General Contractors is developing programs to insure that a sufficient supply of skilled workers is available. This article discusses the national situation with regard to skilled construction workers, examines such issues as attracting young persons into construction occupations and planning to meet supply needs in local areas, and presents Bureau of Labor Statistics projections of labor needs due to industry growth and replacement.
