ANALYZING GOOD DECK PERFORMANCE ON PORT AUTHORITY BRIDGES
This examination of reinforced deck structures on 4 Port Authority of New York and New Jersey bridges, covers design, concrete formulation, and placement attributes contributing to better performance. The term 'good deck' is defined, and the good decks were identified to be the main span of the Goethals Bridge and its New York and New Jersey approaches; the Goethals Bridge parallel approach structure on the New Jersey side; the New York approach from the Henry Hudson Parkway to the George Washington Bridge; and the New Jersey approach ramp of the George Washington Bridge. Deck characteristics are described, with emphasis on structral characteristics, and variations in slab reinforcement. Field sampling and testing showed that all the decks had the following characteristics: 2 inches or more of concrete over the topmost reinforcement; good drainage; structural slabs of 9- to 10-inch thickness; good concrete consolidation; low entrained air; and composite construction. Conclusions drawn from the study are presented, and further studies that seem to be necessary are noted. It is also noted that an accurate history of a deck's performance, maintenance and material properties are of primary importance in any evaluation.
