ASPHALT RECYCLING AND RECLAIMING '88. COLD IN-PLACE TRAIN REVITALIZES COUNTY ROAD

The use is described of cold in-place recycling on a county road (Clinton County, Iowa) to combat reflective cracking, and extend road life. The cold in-place recycling was done in a multi-unit "train" over 90 feet long. Specifications for the job called for milling to 4 inches deep in a swath 12.5 feet wide, with material thrown into a crusher to 1.25-inch maximum size. Other details of the mix are summarized. A 25-ton rubber-tired roller compacted the material for initial compaction, and then a vibratory roller provided further compaction. A 2-inch asphalt mat and rock shoulder will complete the job. It is expected the pavement will last 18-20 years, and that recycling will continue to play a role in county maintenance. It is noted that cost was originally the reason for using cold in-place recycling over other methods.
