A CONCEPTUAL MODEL FOR SOILS CONTAINING LARGE GAS BUBBLES
A conceptual model for soils containing large gas-filled cavities is described. The model consists of a matrix of saturated soil surrounding isolated gas-filled cavities. The cavities forming the bubble sites are fixed within the soil, so that gas drainage occurs only by the movement of dissolved gas. The processes of localized consolidation and bubble flooding complicate the behavior of the model. The model can be used to predict various aspects of the soil behavior, such as the shear strength, the consolidation behavior, and the elastic moduli. The paper discusses basic concepts, as well as stress analysis, movement of dissolved gas, localized consolidation and bubble flooding.
