USE OF SOFT ROCKFILL AT EVRETOU DAM, CYPRUS

This paper presents the geotechnical properties of a soft rockfill together with the design mesures and compaction procedures necessary to allow use of the rockfill for the construction of a large dam. The paper also discusses the properties of the Evretour Dam core material and alluvial foundations. The construction at Evretou dam has confirmed that soft sedimentary rocks can be used in embankment dam construction, provided that appropriate measures are taken in the design. It is noted that rockfill quarries should be fully investigated at design stage, with a full-scale trial embankment built of material taken from deep in the quarry, if there is any doubt about rock quality. Flexibility in design (relating to toe weights, siting of structure, internal zoning of embankment) should be employed where problems with rockfill quality are anticipated.
