ARTERIAL STREETS: IMPORTANT COMPONENTS OF VANCOUVER'S URBAN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
Vancouver's strong arterial street grid system, on which it depends for its transportation needs, is discussed. The system (with spacing approximately one kilometer, and providing north/south focus and east/west continuity) has the flexibility to respond to 3 characteristics: incremental growth patterns; temporary disruptions in service to single links; and major events generating short-term, highly peaked conditions. Each of these areas is discussed in some detail.
