A LOOK AT WHAT SOME STATES ARE DOING. ALASKA'S ENCAPSULATED THERMISTOR PROBE
The thermistor probes are described which are a viable alternative to the FWD (falling weight deflectometer) and can generate the thaw depth data needed to determine the critical spring thaw period. Most pavement damage caused by heavy trucks occurs during this spring thaw period, and load restrictions are implemented during the spring to limit this damage. Montana has successfully used thermistor probes to reduce the duration of the spring thaw load restriction period while maintaining pavement integrity. Alaska has been using thermistor strings for many years. The latter are electronic temperature measuring devices which provide temperature data at various depths. Recent technological advances have produced an off-the-shelf Encapsulated Thermistor Probe at a much reduced cost. The probe consists of a solid-state thermistor string encased on a sturdy, epoxy-filled PVC tube.
