NEW ORLEANS JAZZY DRIVER: PROMOTING PROFESSIONALISM

In an attempt to improve the poor images of taxicab drivers, the Jazzy Driver training program was begun in September 1987. The program currently requires not only taxicab drivers, but also limousine, van, bus, and horse and buggy drivers, to attend this yearly program in order to have their licenses renewed. Classes are held three times a month depending upon demand with class sizes ranging from 50 to 225 participants. Viewed with criticism and negativism upon initial arrival to the classes, it has been found that most drivers leave the session with a better attitude and the feeling that this was a worthwhile venture. The improvements brought about as a result of this program have received good reviews from visitors to the city, the media and the local community. The classes not only give instruction to drivers as to how they can better service their clients, but also listens to driver concerns and implements changes and ideas suggested by the drivers themselves. The major thrust of the program is to make everyone understand that the taxicab industry is an "honorable profession".
