METROPOLITAN CONGESTION: TOWARDS A TOLERABLE ACCOMMODATION
Urban-suburban congestion is not tolerable in the minds of too many people. The transportation community is faced with the frustration resulting from our free choice society--a society where people do make the choices and where the transportation professionals are servants to the society, servants charged with finding solutions that will support citizen-customer choices. Trained, committed transportation professionals, especially a new breed of leadership, is the key to solving the metropolitan congestion crises. In this context, the author discusses solutions through: growth management or balancing of job creation with provision of infrastructure; high tech options (e.g., the European and Japanese systems being developed to provide traffic information to drivers); and low tech solutions such as selective construction authorizations.
