COMPUTER SYSTEM TO AID ICE MOVEMENT PREDICTION

U.S. capability to predict global sea ice conditions will be improved during the next six months when a computer-based system is installed at the Navy/NOAA Joint Ice Center in Suitland, Maryland, replacing the manual analysis techniques currently used. The center is responsible for providing global sea ice analysis and forecasts for the Defense Department and civilian users. Satellite imagery provides about 90% of the information necessary to make the ice reports, which are important to navigation safety for the Navy and commercial shipping. The automated system will provide analysts rapid access to satellite imagery from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellites. Use of computers will also make it much easier to distinguish ice from clouds. The center provides fleet users with information on ice age and hardness, identifies openings in sea ice, and locates icebergs.
