GIS SYSTEM EXPANDING COUNTY CAPABILITIES
The Public Works Department in Utah County, Utah, is using a Geographical Information System (GIS) to do more work without increasing staff. Nearly every county agency is using the GIS. For example, the planning department generates zone maps with the county's road information, city boundaries, and river lines; the assessor's office uses parcel information for reassessment purposes; and the sheriff's department plans emergency routes with the help of GIS road and hazard information. This article discusses in greater detail the applications of the GIS in Utah County. An insert with this article explains the difference between CAD and GIS.
