PUTTING UP SOUND WALLS FROM THE TOP DOWN
Precast concrete sound wall panels are placed and leveled atop precast footing forms before the footings are constructed and cured. Rebars protruding from the bottom of the panels tie the wall to its new foundation. S.J. Groves & Sons, Minneapolis, is constructing the approaches to the new I-90 bridge between Mercer Island and the east shore of Lake Washington near Seattle under a $30.1 million, 3-year contract with Washington State DOT. The 1.1-mile project is divided into 7 stages of construction to maintain 6 or more lanes of I-90 traffic at all times. One temporary and 13 permanent walls, some only partially constructed in any one phase, are required. Two of the walls are actually sound barriers constructed from the top down. This article describes the construction methods employed and progress to date.
