ANOTHER NEW YORK CITY SPAN SUFFERS CORROSION
New York City Department of Transportation efforts to halt corrosion in 4 steel stringers beneath the outer roadway of the Queensboro Bridge are described. The corroded stringers sustained losses of about 15%. The roadway will be closed for 5 days while NYCDOT bridge maintenance personnel install 3/8-in-thick plates on both sides of the stringers. Highlights of the project are briefly described. NYCDOT notes that it has paid dearly for generations of overlooking preventive maintenance, and that it is now inspecting poor bridges at 6-month cycles as opposed to the federally required 2-year cycle.
