INTERSTATE JOB FLOATING ALONG

The progress is reported of the 6-mile Interstate 664 bridge-tunnel, the last major link in a loop around several southeastern Virginia cities. The major elements of the $350 million crossing are: a man-made peninsula jutting out from the Newport News waterfront to serve as the northern tunnel portal; the 4,500-ft double-bore tunnel; a man-made island to serve as the southern portal; and a 3.1-mile twin trestle that continues to the Suffolk waterfront. The project involved the floating of fifteen 300-feet-long prefabricated tunnel sections more than 100 miles down the Chesapeake Bay. 70-ft reusable forms were used to place 7,500 cubic yards of concrete lining into the double-bore tubes. Highlights of the construction are described. The dredging for the construction of the peninsula is described. The trestle project, which involves more than 6 miles of 2-lane bridges, took only 24 months to complete.
