AESTHETIC MANUAL SPECS I-255 DESIGN, LANDSCAPING
The article describes how archaeological studies, historic sites, state park and residential neighborhoods have had an impact on the design of the Illinois circumferential highway. An extensive archaeological salvage program of Indian settlements in the highway path was performed. The article describes how aesthetic guidelines were developed for the I-255 project. An official aesthetic manual covering such diverse details as the design, materials and texturing of bridge abutments, piers, decks and parapets, fences and rails, and noise barriers, overhead sign structure design, inlaid embankments, and plant design was developed. The aesthetic guidelines create a whole vocabulary of motifs and treatments that can be used along the highway without monotony. The guidelilnes emphasize the need for both uniformity and variation in design.
