ROAD SYSTEM DATABASE HELPS CITY KEEP PACE
A roadway database management system that will substantially improve its ability to track roadway conditions and needs has been implemented in St Catherines, Ontario, Canada. The article describes how although a pavement management system called MUNIPARS was being used, a large problem of preparing and manipulating its data still existed. The data base system is described which reduced the cost and effort of maintaining the MUNIPARS database and gave the city control of the data from its own office. In 1983, the city moved the database to its own microcomputer. MUNIPARS database was loaded into a database protype called dROAD. The steps in implementing the local database are described. The definition of Data Reference points is also described. The methods used to enter raw data are summarized.
