NIGHT WORK, SLURRY SHAFTS PART OF I-45 WIDENING
A Houston project involving expressway expansion, HOV (high occupancy vehicles) lanes, and reconstructed overpasses done under heavy traffic is described. Paving is done at off hours, and the project includes unique methods of sinking piers to 170 feet below grade. Details of the reconstruction are summarized. Roadway improvements include the removal of the existing outside shoulders, and their replacement. Three overpasses are being lengthened and widened considerably. Piers for overpasses are drilled using a technique borrowed fromt the oil industry. Slurry shafts are used because they can be poured in areas that have a lot of water-bearing layers. On the slurry-drilled shafts, reinforcement need not go all the way down - only the first 36 inches down from the the surface is reinforced. Other highlights of the construction are noted.
