TEN TOP PROJECTS FOR 1988

This article briefly describes some of the impressive nominees for Outstanding Civil Engineering Awards in 1988. These include the 108 ft wide and 320 ft long Danziger Vertical Lift Bridge, the world's largest such bridge, which carries seven lanes of U.S. Route 90 across the canal into downtown New Orleans. The bridge's vertical and horizontal clearances allow 90 to 95% of the canal's maritime traffic to pass without lifting of the span. It is a model of highly specialized design with a lightweight steel orthotropic deck, precisely welded closed box section for the towers and a streamlined vertical guidance system that accommodates thermal changes in the steel deck. Another award nominee is the new Franconia Notch Highway, recognized as one of America's most beautiful highways. The design and construction of the highway was influenced by environmentalists. Naturally stained wood was used on structures, stonework on bridges, and unpainted weathered steel to avoid disrupting the aesthetics of the wooded corridor. A carefully crafted environmental plan prevents erosion of soils , and the siltation of the clear lakes and streams. The details are also summarized of the correction measures for a landslide in California, the Tom Moreland Interchange in Atlanta, the reconstruction of Chicago's Lake Shore Drive, and others.
