INTERNATIONAL GATHERING STUDIES POST-TENSIONING

A symposium to discuss the state-of-the-art post-tensioning techinques, new applications for bridges and buildings, and alternatives to the use of steel for prestressing tendons is reported. It is noted that prestressing and post-tensioning are being increasingly used for remedial work, and to improve foundation and wall anchoring systems in seismic areas and dams. Australian use of load-monitorable, re-stressable, polyethylene-encapsulated anchors to strengthen five major gravity dams is noted. It was suggested that fibers and composites using fibers may be used as alternatives to steel for prestressing in the future. Innovative post-tensioning techniques in the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida were noted. Advantage is being taken of such techniques when long spans, economics and aesthetics are critical. Almost all bridges under construction in France are being built with external tendons, while in the U.S., external prestressing is seen as a way to reduce the weight of a structure.
