EFFECT OF LEE-WAKE ON SCOUR BELOW PIPELINES IN CURRENT
A study is reported which investigated the effect of lee-wake on scour below pipelines exposed to currents. The experimental set-up is described, and the experimental results are presented and analyzed. Comparisons are made with predictions from discrete vortex model. It was found that vortex shedding is present in the lee-wake of a pipeline from rather early stages of scour process, leading to an organized wake flow. The scour downstream of the pipeline is apparently governed by this organized flow. Other observations are made regarding the discrete vortex model Cloud-in-Cell (CIC), and the time average bed shear stress.
